Homes and Adam Rapp inaugurated the reading series in October 2005 in support of the literacy nonprofit Behind the Book, which is creating a reading revolution in NYC public schools. Readers have included Mia Alvar, Jami Attenberg, Jennifer Egan, Álvaro Enrigue, Joshua Ferris, Mary Gaitskill, Rivka Galchen, Mary Gordon, Francisco Goldman, Lev Grossman, Phil Klay, Alexandra Kleeman, Victor LaValle, Susan Minot, Rick Moody, Susanna Moore, Sigrid Nunez, Helen Phillips, Tea Obreht, Julie Otsuka, Tom Perrotta, Arthur Phillips, Karen Russell, Christine Schutt, Jim Shepard, Lionel Shriver, Darin Strauss, Hannah Tinti, Lily Tuck, Adelle Waldman, Colson Whitehead, and John Wray, among numerous others. The reading series is for adults and its purpose is to raise Behind the Book's public profile amongst the NYC-area book-reading, loving, publishing, and writing communities.
