Richard Rumelt has been described as the "strategist's strategist." Best known for his work on corporate strategy, his research has covered corporate diversification strategy and sustainable competitive advantage, and more recently industry transitions and the evolution of complex industries. Professor Rumelt was named to the prestigious Thinkers50 list of vanguard business thought leaders in 2011 and 2013.
Richard Rumelt has authored or co-authored numerous business publications and books, including Strategy, Structure and Economic Performance, Fundamental Issues in Strategy and Good Strategy/Bad Strategy: The Difference and Why it Matters.
In addition to his academic work, Richard has been a consultant to numerous firms, non-profit organizations, the Department of Defense, and several governments on competitive advantage, how to strengthen it, how to exploit inertia and riding waves of change.
Between 1972 and 1976 Professor Rumelt was on the faculty of the Harvard Business School, with two of those years spent on assignment to found the Harvard-sponsored Iran Center for Management Studies (ICMS).
Richard Rumelt was a founding member of the Strategic Management Society and served as its president in 1995-98.

During 1992-96 Richard Rumelt served on the faculty at INSEAD, France, where he headed the Corporate Renewal Initiative, a research/intervention center devoted to the study and practice of corporate transformation.
Professor Rumelt earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. During 1963-65 he worked as a systems engineer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratories. He also studied decision sciences and corporate strategy at the Harvard Business School, receiving his doctorate in 1972.
