In 1957 the transistor became commercially available. IBM made mainframes. In the late 1960s, the 3 most important futuristic organizations to work for were NASA, Digital Equipment Corp., and Motorola. These 3 entities controlled the modern world of technology. Everything we have today came from them. Unfortunately, there is a fine precipice between technical excellence and consumerism...DEC failed horribly at the personal computer market "There is no reason for any individual to have a computer in his home", and finally reversing course after trying to catch up to the IBM PC, the company collapsed within a few years. Ironically, today everything is in the cloud and the new generation has no computer in the home! A tragic end to a brilliant company.
